‘Crumbling Old Town Hall won’t be there 10 years from now’ says the headline in Monday’s Star.
How I wish this was a firm commitment rather than just a newspaper headline.
Let’s face it, this building has outlived its usefulness and is now just a dirty, derelict eyesore and a stumbling block to the redevelopment of a part of the city centre that badly needs it.
As it is a listed building, we can’t demolish it and build something useful that people need/want here and now.
What a pity.
Preserve historic old buildings by all means, but there has to be more of a reason to do so than the fact that they are merely old, otherwise we are just making ourselves prisoners of the past.
