The heart of Sheffield

During the Second World War Sheffield Central Library became the centre from which news was disseminated in times of emergency. In the aftermath of the Sheffield Blitz in 1940 a missing relatives bureau was set up there. Streams of people who had been made homeless or who had lost touch with family members or friends came seeking help and information. Whilst library staff continued to catalogue and issue books, they also offered words of comfort and served welcome refreshments.

Whatever might happen in the future, the Central Library should continue to be at the heart of Sheffield’s community. Moreover, with so many people interested in the history of their City, the possibility of bringing Sheffield Archives and the Local Studies Library back together again should also not be overlooked.
