THE Festival Of The Mind – an 11-day extravaganza set to entertain and enlighten Sheffield – begins with a mini rocket launch in Weston Park today from 12pm.
The majority of performances will take place in a large spiegel tent erected in Barker’s Pool this week – but dozens of other venues across the city will also host events and exhibitions.
Among the more, um, unusual are...
Animal Magic (Today, 12pm, Weston Park)
Professor Tim Birkhead will create giant bird nests which to place around the city centre - with people then encouraged to climb inside.
Von Guericke Re-enactment (September 21, 11am, Barker’s Pool)
A re-enactment of a famous 17th century experiment using volunteers in a giant tug of war to demonstrate atmospheric pressure.
Mind-Out (September 20 - 30, 12-5pm, CADS in Snow Lane)
A week-long exhibition of live urban art - being done by robots.
Tracing the Footsteps of Hephaestus (September 28, 10am, Town Hall steps)
A lone figure perches on the roof of Sheffield Town Hall. Who is he? And how on earth did he get there? The mystery will be solved with entertaining street theatre and a live archaeological dig.
