And here’s a couple more creative-types who have started their own fashion label.
David Manning and Jo Breese, along with housemates Sophie Menzies and Sam Robinson, have turned their rented Sheffield digs into the headquarters for a T-shirt company, Badger and Kingdom, which has already sold items across the globe. Which, let’s be frank, is better than the usual student practice of turning rented accommodation into a mass of empty beer cans, pizza boxes and bathroom mould so evolved it practically asks how you are each morning.
The quartet – of Upper Hanover Street and all on different Sheffield Hallam Uni courses – set up the online firm to beat the recession.
“We’re always being told it’s hard to get jobs when we leave university,” explains Jo. “So, we thought if we can make a success of our doing something we love, we could get round that.”
And it seems the foursome, all aged 20 and 21, have already started to achieve such success. They have sold more than 100 T-shirts – which are designed and marketed from that house, but made in Sri Lanka – including to customers in Australia.
“We sit at home and it’s all we can talk about,” says David.
