Leah’s yard might not be lost to the Retail Quarter, but it will be robbed of all its surviving historic context, and the many other demolitions in this highly destructive scheme will do substantial harm to the City Centre Conservation Area and cause the total disintegration of the historically significant street grid, in the expert judgment of Historic England.

This is a plan that views heritage as an optional cosmetic add-on, from a council that for years has regarded old buildings as a burden rather than an opportunity.

It remains to be seen whether Ian Saunders’ appointment as a Heritage Champion who actually cares about the role will do anything to change this, but there will plenty of people cheering him on.
