I want the council to hold public meetings into the future of the library service in Sheffield.
I also want a public debate with the opposition and public able to raise concerns regarding the future of this vital service.
It would also be beneficial if the opposition parties on the council and the ruling Labour Administration could properly recognise the informal social work library staff do (for example providing vital social support to the elderly and isolated, which, it could be argued, saves the council cash on providing other social services).
I would like to invite campaign groups, councillors, library staff, library users, to comment on the current state of the library service in this column, and suggest positive options for its future.
A fully staffed library service is vital not just for library users, but as the cost-effective social service it provides and which saves the council cash on other services.
