I assume your correspondent SJ will a first-time voter at the forthcoming Referendum. So let me help.
Whenever you go to vote, there is always a stubby pencil on a string in each voting booth for you to use. Always has been since I’ve been voting. It is for any voter to use.
However you can use a fountain pen/biro/felt pen/marker pen/laundry pen if that is what you want to do. The important thing is that you put your cross against your choice.
So turn up and vote. Bring the pen of your choice or use a stubby municipal pencil. It is up to you!
