RECESSION? What recession?

RECESSION? What recession?

Here’s a newly opened high class art gallery which the owners hope will make a (metal) ass of the current financial crisis.

Ecclesall Gallery, opened by Steve Mehdi and partner Jane Hughes this month, is selling sculptures like this horse for thousands of pounds each – and it’s already doing more than just ‘stable’ business.

“We’re hoping we can defy the current gloom and bring a good economic news story here,” says Steve, 55.

“We thought long and hard about whether now was the right time to open because people are tightening their belts but we felt there was a market. For some people, buying art is an investment.”

The pair had previously been involved in the Peter Hill Gallery, also Ecclesall Road, but decided to open their own place in a bid to show more of their own work.

That horse is one of Steve’s particular pieces.

“I wasn’t born in Sheffield but I lived there for 30 years,” says the one-time steel worker of Grindleford. “I feel the city’s influence and I think that is reflected in the horse.”

Jane, 52, also runs an interior design service from the venue.
