RAISE a glass to Hannah Higgins, an optician’s assistant who is currently, well, raising glasses.
The 20-year-old is eyeing up an ambitious target – collecting 1,000 pair of specs to take to The Gambia.
There the Leeds Uni biomedical student will spend nearly two weeks working at a temporary eye clinic in the city of Banjul
Oh, and if you think you recognise Hannah, you don’t need your own eyes testing – she appeared here after being crowned Miss South Yorkshire last month.
“Winning was incredible,” she says. “I made loads of friends and now I want to use it to make the most of this project.”
Hannah, of Wentworth Road, Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, is one of only four people on the programme, organised by the eye care charity OneSight.
She will work with an estimated 750 people each week – all good practice, perhaps, for her future dream of being a doctor.
“I feel so honoured to be working on something which is hopefully going to change people’s lives,” she says.
You can donate old glasses at Faulkner’s Hairport in Brinsworth Road, Brinsworth, or any South Yorkshire Sunglass Hut.
