The issue of corporate pay at this time of austerity is one the council should be making more of an effort to address.
According to the council website, the two new assistant directors that the council recently recruited will earn around £130,000 combined at least. This is clearly unacceptable given the cuts in hours and pay doled out to the teaching assistants, librarians and others over the years.
As an interesting point, the £130,000 allocated to these two corporate non-jobs could have funded the restaffing of at least four community libraries by my calculations. The council needs to get its house in order and introduce a recruitment freeze on management positions using any savings to fund librarians or other front-line staff. In short, there is no excuse for spending six-figure sums recruiting more managers when half the libraries are having to be run by volunteers based on previous experience.
