AND here’s another shopping first...
England’s only dedicated roller derby store has just opened in Sheffield city centre.
What do you mean ‘what’s roller derby’?
It’s the fastest growing team game in the world; a high-octane pastime where sides of five don skates and spend an hour crashing into each other at serious speeds. Points are scored somehow or other.
And, while the sport may still be niche, Craig Nicholson reckons now is the perfect time to open a store selling specialist equipment. Which is to say a store selling crash helmets, gum shields, knee pads, toe caps, elbow protectors and, er, the odd pair of skates.
“It’s a full on sport, growing like crazy,” says the 34-year-old, of Heeley, who left a retail job to set up Derby Store, in Eldon Street. “There’s nothing like this in England. Players have to buy from America or go to general shops which don’t have expertise. Here, they can get everything under one roof or from one website.”
Here’s hoping it’s a roll-away success.
