AND from the young at heart to the just plain young... While Gladys will spend Friday night spinning, this little lad is to occupy Saturday morning digging.
The youngster, eight-year-old Harvey Eyre-Wood of Rivelin, is one of several children signed up for what is thought to be the first specialist garden club for under 10s in Sheffield.
Aptly named Little Sprouts the group will learn to pot, plant, create and propagate at Garden Style garden centre in West Lane, Loxley.
“It’s a sad fact that many kids today don’t know where a potato comes from or that you can grow a tomato plant from a seed,” says Pat Brears, owner of Garden Style. “Little Sprouts aims to give kids the basics of growing and at the same time let them have fun digging in the dirt and looking at garden insects and animals. What child, given the opportunity, wouldn’t enjoy that?”
And mum and dad should find plenty of pleasure in it too.
Because once the veg the little ones plant grows to fruition the youngsters will be able to take it home for the dinner table.
“Gardening and in particular growing your own is currently going through a renaissance,” says Pat. “We want to help kids get the bug good and early.”
Little Sprouts runs monthly on Saturdays, 9.30 – 11am from April 21. For more details call 0114 285 1487.
