LUKE French isn’t exactly like Jamie Oliver.
He has more stubble, sharper hair, and refuses to use words like ‘pukka’ to describe, for example, beetroot. But the 26-year-old might just be about to become Sheffield’s (fully clothed) answer to the Naked Chef.
The Milestone restaurant head chef is to star in an ‘online TV’ food series currently being filmed at the restaurant.
“Jamie Oliver?” he says. “I’d rather be the new Heston Blumenthal.”
Either way, the series – a monthly 15 minute show available on the Green Lane restaurant’s own website – will show him whipping up a range of dishes for viewers to follow (and try for themselves) at home.
“The idea is to generate some interest for the great food we’re making down here,” says the cook who originally comes from Cambridge but now lives in Green Lane.
“I don’t really see myself as a TV chef – although I wouldn’t mind their pay packets – but I like the idea of people visiting the site, looking at the show and getting interested in cooking.”
Filming by Sheffield firm Fortay Media started this week. The restaurant’s dining room was taken over for the shoot.
“It’s nervewracking,” says Luke. “I’m not expecting too much fan mail, though.”
