They might sound a little bizarre but these are just some of the ideas generated by a nationwide competition hoping to encourage a greener, brighter and more fun Sheffield.

Architects, artists and designers from across the country were asked to come up with original proposals to improve some of the city’s more neglected areas.

And the results are...well, certainly, original.

“It was a real privilege to judge some really novel, striking and completely bonkers ideas,” says architect David Bickle, chair of the Forgotten Spaces judging panel, which has now reduced 60 entries to a short list of just 19 before a final winner is decided in September.

More of those novel ideas, then? Giant bells hanging from the Parkway flyover, a neon-lit walkway between Ecclesall and Sharrow and a sewer exploration centre – complete with shower unit for said explorers – under Sheffield Station.

Sound far-fetched? That’s probably because, strictly speaking, they are.

None of the proposals – not even the eventual winner, which will earn its designer a cool £5,000 – are ever likely to come to fruition.

It’s an ideas-generating exercise, being run by Sheffield Hallam University and the Royal Institute of British Architects, to show the potential for redeveloping she city.

“That’s not to say, however, we wouldn’t like the winning idea – and a few more besides – to be turned into reality at some point,” says John Palmer, director of communications with Sheffield Hallam.

“Certainly we’d encourage developers to look at all entrants and if they show potential and if they’re popular, to consider the feasibility of developing the plan if possible.”

How feasible it would be, for example, to build a golf driving range in front of stores in Blackstock Road, Gleadless, however remains unclear.

“We think it would have a lot of potential,” says Luke Lunde-Pickover, of Click, the Sheffield design firm behind the idea. “Something like that could definitely help put the area on the map and would attract people there, which in turn would help regenerate local neighbourhoods.

“Why golf? It just seemed a perfect space for a driving range – and you don’t get many of those in inner city areas so...why not?”

An exhibition of all 19 of the short -listed designs will be staged at The Crucible in September with the winning entrant to be announced at a ceremony there in September.
