Youngsters earn their corn grappling with a slippery customer

A KALEIDOSCOPE of creatures came to call at a north Derbyshire school – as part of events to mark its 50th anniversary.

The visit from the Zoolab team thrilled pupils at Holmesdale Infants in Dronfield who couldn't wait to see what was living in a mysterious group of boxes.

First to appear was a corn snake and every child was given the opportunity to hold the reptile.

Though many were confident, other children and some adults were happier to observe from a distance.

Next to appear was a giant African snail, which left a slimy trail on the children's hands, while other treats included a stick insect, a tarantula, a tree frog and a rabbit called Peter.

Zoolab experts discussed the different feeding habits, features and habitat of the animals to give each child a greater understanding of how they survive in the wild.

The golden anniversary was also marked by an open day for past pupils and staff and several parties.
