ON your marks!

These speedy school pupils launched the Sheffield Half Marathon fun run – a 3km challenge held as part of the main event.

And the youngsters from Rudston Preparatory School in Rotherham will be taking part in the fun run themselves with the aim of raising £10,000 for charity Bluebell Wood children’s hospice.

For four years staff and pupils have shone in both events but this year they are going for gold.

Headmistress Lynda Sharpe said: “We take part because Bluebell Wood is a great charity and we have healthy school status so we do try to make sure the youngsters do lots of exercise.

“With it being an Olympic year we wanted to push the boat out and see if we can raise £10,000.

“This time there are more pupils taking part than ever before, with 42.”

In 2010 the independent preparatory school raised £6,000 through the fun run and half marathon for Bluebell Wood in North Anston and last year raised £9,000.

Margaret Lilley, chairman of the half marathon organising committee, said the support of Rudston was ‘hugely appreciated’.

Children, adults and wheelchair users can take part in the fun run around Don Valley Stadium and fancy dress is encouraged. This year’s SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and fun run are on Sunday, May 27.
