Have-a-go brothers Otis and Oscar are youngsters on a mission as they prepare to take part in their first organised running race as part of the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon.
The Fulwood pair are set to lace up their trainers and try their luck in the junior race on April 9, as they also help to raise money for the Children’s Hospital Charity.
Ten-year old Oscar and Otis, six, chose to support the charity in a way that’s good for their health too, after many overnight stays in Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Both boys suffer from asthma attacks.
Their dad, Richard Burgess, will run the full half-marathon for the same cause. He said of his sons’ health issues: “It certainly wasn’t much fun for them, but they have both recognised that they have been looked after as well as they could be.
“As a family, we recognise how lucky we are to have these facilities in the city.”
Despite their asthma, both brothers are keen runners who regularly join in the five-kilometres Park Run on Saturday mornings in Endcliffe Park. Otis has secured an impressive personal best of 32 minutes, while Oscar can now complete the run in under 23 minutes.
“They are used to doing the full five kilometre park run. Oscar got involved after seeing masses of people running down Rustlings Road a couple of years ago, and Otis did what little brothers do, and followed his older sibling into the event.” added Richard.
“The boys have chosen this for the experience of taking part in a large event, which includes raising money for a charity that they believe in.”
Oscar and Otis will join Team Theo for the run....the Children’s Hospital Charity’s group of active challenge fundraisers.
Caitlin Hallatt, community fundraising assistant at the charity, said: “Oscar and Otis are a great example of youngsters helping other youngsters. It is fantastic to see them so committed to their sport, while raising much-needed funds to help make Sheffield Children’s Hospital even better!”
The charity funds improvements to Sheffield Children’s Hospital that are above standard NHS provision. Money raised helps to buy the very latest medical equipment, and funds research in to the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses, while adding improvements to the hospital environment.
