Yorkshire voice

Have your say

In the city centre, I heard two men chatting, both in broad Sheffield accents. Not unusual -except one was West Indian.

For me this is unusual, to hear a black person speaking broad Yorkshire. Accent is determined by the dialect we’re immersed in. If racial integration had worked, all minorities born here or arrived very young would speak our accent. The majority don’t as most, not all, only mix among their own.
