XBOX MURDER: 'Part truths of witnesses'

UNTANGLING lies from the truth to discover what had happened to tragic Dale Robertson proved a difficult investigation, detectives said today.

Det Supt Richard Fewkes said: "The fact we had a lot of juveniles at the party presented problems in terms of investigating.

"We were faced with a situation where witnesses who will have seen what happened were allied to the offenders and, for that reason, they either wouldn't talk to us, lied to us, or gave us versions of the event which were only partly the truth.

"We had to work with the CPS and prosecuting barrister to work out what was the reliable evidence and do what we could to support eyewitness accounts using forensics, mobile phone evidence and independent eyewitness evidence.

"On top of that many of those who attended the party had been drinking - although interestingly all of them claimed they were not intoxicated to the extent they didn't know what they were doing."

Det Supt Fewkes said initially up to 100 officers were involved in the investigation including uniformed police, detectives, forensic experts and scenes of crime officers.
