World Cup 'worth £141m to Sheffield'

THE Sheffield economy could benefit from a £140 million windfall if the city's bid to host 2018 World Cup matches is successful, a council report claims.

Chris Gratton, a sports economist at Sheffield Hallam University, said in a report to the Sheffield Council leadership that the 15 million expected cost of hosting matches would be met four times over by the 85m brought in from international visitors alone. He estimated total revenue could be as high as 141m.

At a cabinet meeting next Wednesday, councillors are set to approve the next stage of the city's campaign to be part of England's bid to host the tournament.

Sheffield has already submitted two outline bids, at a cost of 40,000. Officers estimate the next stage of bidding will cost 100,000, which will be met by Sheffield Council, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as a range of other contributors.

The England 2018 committee announces its final decision on the list of candidate host cities next month.

Coun Colin Ross, the council's business spokesman, said: "The case for being a host city is compelling in terms of the economic benefits and the sense of pride it will give to Sheffielders.

"Although agreeing the bid in cabinet will be an important step, it will then be over to the public to vote for their city before the December deadline."
