CIVIC dignitaries and grandchildren of a health worker gathered to plant a tree and unveil a bench in her memory at the South Yorkshire centre where she used to work.

Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham Coun Dave Pickering and wife Sue carried out the duties with youngsters Mia Paterson, Lola Paterson and George Smith, at Burns Court centre, which helps people with mental health problems to integrate with the community.

The three youngsters are all grandchildren of Liz Underwood, who had worked at Burns Court for several years but has recently died.

The tree and bench were installed as part of fifth anniversary celebrations at the Maltby complex, run by South Yorkshire Housing Association.

Residents, their friends and families attended the party which also had a barbecue and a range of activities.

Carl Peel, a key worker, said: “Burns Court is a brilliant place, we offer independent living space to people who need a stepping stone.”
