Work to start on dam repair

A COMMUNITY restoration project working in a natural beauty spot in Sheffield has reached a milestone in its fundraising campaign.

The Friends of Charlton Brook have now raised enough money - through fundraising events and grant applications - to begin working on their long-term aim of restoring the dam and its surroundings.

The group has received 48,808 from the Community Spaces initiative, 30,000 from the Environment Agency, and 20,408 from Viridor, through their Landfill Communities Fund.

The improvements revolve around desilting the dam, and work begins on the project next month.

Once this has been completed, the dam will stand for 12 months, before being restocked and turned into a bespoke fishery.

The group has also helped get the nearby BMX track upgraded and contributed to improvements to the existing toddler play area founded in 2006.

Fundraiser Michelle Tilney said: "This area has much to offer for local communities in the middle of a bustling residential area.

"It is a vital green lung within the community with its natural brook within a valley, a dam, woodland and meadows, and it also provides homes to lots of wildlife including a regular pair of kingfishers."
