A GROUND breaking ceremony takes place this Friday to mark the start of construction of Sheffield’s new £8.5 million University Technical College on Matilda Street.

Master Cutler Pam Liversidge OBE and council leader Coun Julie Dore will join contractor Wates and project sponsor The Sheffield College to mark the start of the work.

The college, which will become the first UTC in Yorkshire and one of only 18 across the UK, will have a capacity for 600 students aged 14 to 19. The facility will provide specialist vocational learning within the engineering and digital sectors.

The three-storey building will include practical learning provision, as well as a five-a-side football pitch on the roof to maximise space.

The project is due for completion in September 2013.
