Work has started on a new £9.3 million sports centre in Chesterfield.

A turf cutting ceremony was held to mark the start of the project to replace Queen’s Park Sports Centre on Boythorpe Road.

The new centre is being built on land at the Queen’s Park Annexe and is due to open in early 2016.

It is being funded with £4.8 million from Chesterfield Council, £2m from Sport England and £2.5m from Chesterfield College, whose students will use the facilities.

The centre will boast an eight-lane swimming pool, an eight-court sports hall, 80- station gym, two glass-back squash courts, three training rooms and a café.
