Chesterfield bar Einstein’s opened its doors on Christmas Day to offer a warm welcome and hot festive lunch to those in need.

The whole team at the Holywell Street bar waived their wages to volunteer to work on the day, when 45 people turned out for a three-course meal, drinks and presents.

The idea came about after company director Benjamin Parr, 31, saw the John Lewis Man on the Moon advert and staff realised just how lonely Christmastime can be for some.

Benjamin said: “We were absolutely blown away by people’s responses to the event.

“We had more than 100 gifts donated, from hats and gloves to thermal socks, chocolates and pork pies.

“One of the most touching parts of the day was meeting a lady called Sheila, who is 80-years-old.

“She told us that she hadn’t left her house in 11 years due in part to having broken both of her hips and both wrists.

“She said that she hadn’t eaten anything but microwave meals for over a year.

“She was so thankful for a home-cooked meal and a bit of company and we were honoured to spend the day with her, listening to her stories of years gone by.

“It makes you realise just how lucky you are.”

Drivers from Club Taxis also waived their fees to ensure that vulnerable, disabled and elderly guests were able to attend the event.

At the end of the day, despite giving the guests goodie bags, the team at Einstein’s still had food and gifts left over so took them to the Methodist Church on Whittington Moor where Mydudu Gaven had organised a similar event.
