Women paid £2.31 per hour less than men

MEN in Yorkshire are paid on average £2.31 per hour more than women, new figures reveal.

Statistics published by the Cabinet Office reveal the average hourly earning of the region's men stands at 11.28.

In stark contrast, women in the Yorkshire and Humber region earn on average 8.97 per hour, which represented a 'gender pay gap' of 20.4 per cent.

Despite the findings, John Hills, chairman of the Government's National Equality Panel, said closing the pay gap between men and women would not deal with inequality.

He said: "Even if you get rid of the gender pay gap there will be same inequality as before because the differences between the well paid women and poorly paid women is nearly as large as those between well paid men and poorly paid men."

His remarks have raise questions about Equalities Minister Harriet Harman's plans to force companies to detail how much they pay men and women, in a bid to narrow the gender pay gap.

Under the plans private companies could be forced to detail their pay rates for men and for women.

The figures, published as a parliamentary written answer, includes both full and part time workers.

The pay gap narrows when looking just at full time work because the vast majority of part-time workers are women.

Men working full time in Yorkshire and Humber are paid on average 11.81 per hour, compared to 10.59 for women.
