Woman raped after attacker's night of cocaine and wine
A RAPIST has been jailed for seven years after attacking a young woman as she slept in his spare bedroom.
The victim woke up to find Jack Rees, 41, raping her, Sheffield Crown Court heard.
Prosecutor Rachael Harrison said she ran into the toilet and stayed there for some time.
But later when she was sleeping on the sofa she woke to find him indecently sexually assaulting her.
The court heard the pair had been out drinking before the incident. Rees had also taken cocaine and they shared a bottle of wine on their return to his house on Newton Place, Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham.
Ms Harrison said the following morning he took her home and later sent two texts, one saying, 'Are you okay?', and, 'Don't fall out with me'.
When she failed to respond he used someone else's phone to ring her, she added. The woman went to the police and Rees was arrested the next day.
In interview he denied undressing her or touching her. He continued to deny involvement even after DNA test results in June showed he had raped her, she added.
Rees pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault in October on the day a trial was due to start. Ms Harrison said: "He issued a statement saying, 'I have no recollection of what happened. I accept that something happened and take responsibility'."
Anthony Moore, defending, said: "Intoxication played a major and catastrophic part. His business is in tatters and the relationship with the mother of his young son is over."
Judge Simon Lawler QC jailed Rees for seven years for rape and two years for sexual assault, to be served concurrently.
He said:"You took advantage of a vulnerable situation in your home for your own selfish sexual gratification.
"It's clear she was upset and scared and aggravating factor is sexually assaulting her again when she was sleeping.
"The effect on her has been substantial."
