Road traffic accident on Barnsley Road near its junction with Devon Road.

THIS was the shocking scene after a head-on crash between a bus and a car on a rush-hour Sheffield road.

A woman driver, from Grimesthorpe, was cut free from the wreckage of her car following the smash.

The collision involved a single-decker bus and a Citroen C3 being driven along Barnsley Road in Pitsmoor just after 9am yesterday.

Fire crews from Elm Lane station were quickly on the scene after receiving reports that the driver of the Citroen was trapped.

They used hydraulic cutting gear and a mechanical saw to remove the roof and managed to free the female driver, who is understood to have been slipping in and out of consciousness.

The woman, aged 52, suffered leg, chest and spinal injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Northern General Hospital

Several passengers on the First operated bus, a number 76 to Ecclesfield via Firth Park, complained of suffering whiplash injuries.

The road was closed about 30 yards from the junction with Devon Road for three hours.

A spokesman for First said the bus driver was shocked but otherwise uninjured.

He said the company was helping police accident investigators identify the cause of the collision.

First will also be conducting its own series of investigations into the accident.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses including the four passengers who were travelling on the bus .

Anyone with information that may help should call 101 quoting incident number 207 of February 15.

n A YOUNG driver had a lucky escape yesterday after his car ended up in a pond near a South Yorkshire country road.

The 23-year-old, of Askern, freed himself from the vehicle as it sank beneath the surface of the pond between Doncaster and Askern.

By the time emergency services arrived at the scene, just off the A19, he was out of the water but already suffering from hypothermia.

The crash happened just after 1am when the Renault Clio left the road after a collision with a parked car and plunged into the angling pond on the eastern side of Tilts Bridge.
