Woman of Steel inspires her runner granddaughter

Word about Sheffield’s Women of Steel is spreading far and wide - as a woman in the Scottish Highlands signs up to run the London Marathon in their honour.

Lindsay Cummings will run in memory of her late grandmother, Mary Curbishley, who worked in a Sheffield munitions factory during the Second World War.

Lindsay said: “My nannan felt so proud that her hard work and sacrifices were being recognised by the Women of Steel project.

“I am sad she will never get to see the statue or the roll of honour, but I hope that my contribution will help the project along.”

Lindsay has raised £286 so far for the Women of Steel project, which aims to recognise the outstanding work carried out by women in Sheffield’s steel factories while the men were fighting on the front line.
