Woman killed and two men injured in motorway pile-up

A WOMAN has died and two men are in hospital with serious injuries after a horrific pile-up on a South Yorkshire motorway.

The M18 was closed for more than six hours between junctions 1 and 2, near Doncaster, after a four-vehicle smash at 3.45pm.

The collision - which killed a 25-year-old woman from Reading - happened on the northbound carriageway of the M18, a mile and a half before J2 for Wadworth.

All four vehicles were on the inside lane approaching the A1(M) exit slip road when the disaster unfolded.

A red Mercedes lorry hit the back of a silver Citroen Berlingo, which in turn collided with the rear of a another lorry - a white Scania R2360.

The white lorry then overturned in the inside lane and slid into a white Vauxhall Combo van. The red Mercedes HGV continued across the carriageway, smashing into the central barrier.

Highways officials worked for more than six hours to clear the wreckage - with the M18 closed in both directions until 10.30pm.

Six people were taken to hospital in the aftermath of the crash.

The front seat passenger in the Citroen, a 25-year-old woman from the Reading area, received fatal injuries as a result of the collision.

Her driver, a 27-year-old man also from Reading, is being treated for serious injuries at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

The driver of the red HGV, a 66-year-old Rotherham man, received serious leg injuries and is detained at Rotherham District General Hospital.

Three others were treated for minor injuries - the driver of the white lorry, a 56-year-old man from Rotherham; his passenger, a 61-year-old Doncaster man; and the driver of the white Vauxhall Combo van, a 38-year-old man from Pontefract.
