A WOMAN has been left fighting for life after she was struck by a car as she crossed a South Yorkshire road.

The 48-year-old was rushed to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield with a broken pelvis and head injury, described by medics over the weekend as life threatening.

She was crossing the A61 Wakefield Road, Barnsley, when she was hit by a black Honda CRV around 80 metres before the junction with Newstead Road, at about 7pm on Saturday.

A 44-year-old man she was crossing with at the time was also struck and broke his leg in the collision.

He was taken to Barnsley District Hospital.

The driver of the Honda, a 53-year-old Barnsley man, was arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Witnesses should call 101.
