Woman dies in bypass smash

A WOMAN has died after the car she was driving collided with a lorry on the A616 between the Stocksbridge bypass and Woodhead Pass today.

The woman, in her mid 50s and from New Rossington, near Doncaster, was behind the wheel of a Renault Laguna Sport when the crash happened at around 6.10am.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to the scene, between Flouch and Langsett.

They found the woman trapped in her mangled vehicle and firefighters had to cut her free before paramedics could take over. She died a short time later.

The lorry driver - a 36-year-old man from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire - was also hurt but managed to get out of his vehicle unaided. He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital

The road was closed between Flouch and The Wagon and Horses pub. It reopened around 11am.

Witnesses should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2970.
