A WOMAN car passenger died in a head-on collision in Sheffield in the early hours of this morning, writes Claire Lewis.

The victim, who has not yet been named by police, was in a black Honda Accord which is believed to have crossed onto the wrong side of Crookes Road and hit a taxi travelling in the opposite direction ay 4.15am.

Police said the taxi driver, who was in a gold coloured Hackney cab, suffered a broken arm, broken leg and head injury.

He is being treated in the Northern General Hospital.

The driver of the Honda - a 46-year-old Pitsmoor man - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving.

Police want to hear from witnesses to the incident, close to the junction of Crookes Road and Roslin Road, or anyone who saw the way either of the cars were being driven before the smash.

* One man was trapped in a car and two other passengers were thrown from it when the vehicle ran out of control and overturned in Barnsley.

Police said they were travelling in a Vauxhall Vectra which overtook another car on West Green Way at the approach to the roundabout with Fish Dam Lane, Monk Bretton, at around 1am yesterday.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the Vectra then drove the wrong way round the roundabout and collided with a bollard before leaving the road and overturning.

The car finally came to rest on a grass verge.

There were five people in the car altogether but a 26-year-old male passenger from Royston was the most seriously hurt.

He suffered internal injuries and a fractured pelvis and is detained in Barnsley District General Hospital in a serious condition.

A 19-year-old Royston woman, who was also a passenger, has been detained in the same hospital but details of her injures have not yet been released.

Two other passengers, a 24-year-old Royson man and a 21-year-old woman from Cudworth, both escaped with minor cuts and bruises.

The driver of the car - a 25-year-old Royson man - was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving.
