A FOUR-year-old boy diagnosed with eye cancer as a baby has been granted his wish to be steam engine driver for the day.
Train-mad Ernie Brown told the Make-A-Wish Foundation that he wanted to drive the Tornado steam engine based at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, Chesterfield, after it featured in an episode of BBC’s Top Gear.
Ernie loved the episode so much he watched it repeatedly while he was ill.
Make-A-Wish arranged for Ernie and his family, from Saffron Walden, Essex, to travel to Chesterfield to see the Tornado and other trains.
Ernie spent hours driving up and down the track, shovelling coal into the firebox, and pulling the whistle while wearing a train driver’s hat.
He was also taken on a tour of some of the other trains before jumping aboard a high-speed train where he was allowed to sound the horn and start the engine.
