SHEFFIELD’S Winter Garden was filled with the sound of singing as a South Yorkshire-based people’s choir put on an impromptu lunchtime performance.

Singers from Bevox entertained city centre shoppers and office workers with harmonised pop tunes and songs from the musicals. Numbers included My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music, Close To You by The Carpenters, The Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler and The Voice Within by Christina Aguilera. The concert culminated in a toe-tapping Motown medley.

Bevox is owned and run by choral arranger Tim Allen from Barnsley, and is open without audition to anyone who loves to sing.

Tim said: “You don’t need to have singing experience or be able to read music - we just sing for one night a week, learn some great music, then head out and share it in the community.”

The Sheffield group rehearses on Thursday evenings at Springs Academy, Gleadless, and a new Barnsley group starts up next month. Singers interested in joining either are invited to free taster sessions later this month. Log on to www.bevox.co.uk for venue details.

Bevox performs in the Winter Garden again today and tomorrow at 12.30pm. Visit the Bevox website from Sunday, for footage of an unusual performance by the choir which takes place in Sheffield this Saturday.
