Could I take this opportunity on behalf of the Eagles past players association to congratulate Sheffield Eagles in winning the championship Grand Final for the second year running by beating a determined and dangerous Batley Bulldogs who were coached by John Kear.
John is of course a former Eagles coach who led them to that historic Challenge Cup win at Wembley against an all- conquering Wigan.
It is sad to hear that my former club are having difficulties in finding a ground of their own.
The Eagles have a very strong community ethic which is proven by the valuable work they do working with the schools in the Sheffield area.
I have every confidence that Sheffield council will obviously see the benefit of helping the Eagles in their search for premises and will accord them all available assistance to achieve their goal.
I think that should the Eagles find a rugby league-friendly stadium that allows spectators to see the physical contact between the players and to appreciate the skill and courage from the players, then the club will then see a significant increase in their crowds which will bring new interest from potential sponsors in the club.
The importance of having a successful rugby league club in Sheffield cannot be underestimated in terms of visitors to the city, employment opportunities and a general ‘feelgood factor’.
