Severe gales and heavy rain were set to cause rush hour chaos this morning as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo batter South Yorkshire.
The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ weather warning for Yorkshire and has urged the public to take ‘extra care’ as forecasters predict gusts exceeding 55mph sweeping through inland areas as commuters take to the roads.
A Met Office spokesman said: “The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel and possible damage to trees. Difficult driving conditions will result, perhaps exacerbated by surface water and spray in places.”
The disruptive weather conditions are a result of an area of deep low pressure which is being caused by the hurricane in the mid Atlantic moving North East through the UK.
