HE is a pop success story - and his old teachers at school in Doncaster could not be more proud.
Louis Tomlinson and his pals in boyband One Direction have become the first British group to have their debut album reach number one in America’s Billboard chart.
It means a notch on their CVs not even The Beatles or the Rolling Stones were able to boast.
And the teachers who put Louis through his education today told of their delight at watching his meteoric rise to the top.
Less than three years ago, Jenni Lambert was Louis’ head of year at Hayfield School in Auckley.
She said: “I’m absolutely delighted for him. He was a bit of a rogue at school at times, but he absolutely loved performing, and the thing he lived for most was performing with the band at assemblies.
“It is fantastic to have had a student come through to be so amazingly successful.
“He came to see us between going for the X Factor and getting through, and he asked us all to vote for him.
“Performing was what he always wanted. He is a very charming chap, but he wasn’t a great fan of doing academic work.
“He has a very likable quality, and I think that is probably part of One Direction’s appeal. Now and again I tell my pupils if they work hard they could be as successful as Louis.
“I think we feel very proud. It would be lovely to see him again if he is ever back in Doncaster.”
Louis was photographed by the local press during his time at Hayfield wearing a football shirt and taking part in the school’s film festival. He had put together an entry for the event.
He spent a year at Hall Cross School sixth form before X Factor, performing in a production of Grease.
Staff at his former primary school are also proud of his achievements. He returned to visit Willow Primary School, which his sisters now attend, while he was competing on the X Factor.
Headteacher Yvonne Buckley said: “Louis was a hard-working and determined pupil who is extremely supportive of his sisters.
“They regularly give us updates on how Louis is getting on. He fully deserves all the success he has now achieved and everyone at Willow is extremely proud of him.”
One Direction’s debut album, Up All Night, went straight into the top spot on the 200-album chart, Billboard said.
The previous highest entry for a UK group’s first debut album was number six, when the Spice Girls entered the charts with their album Spice in 1997.
It climbed to the top spot 14 weeks after it first entered the chart.
Boyband One Direction - Louis, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Liam Payne - are signed to Simon Cowell’s label Syco.
The teen pop stars, who first became known on the 2010 X Factor, visited America on a promotional tour earlier this month.
More than 10,000 fans turned up to see their first live TV performance in the US on NBC’s Today Show in Rockefeller Plaza, New York.
They sold 176,000 copies of their album in the US in the space of a week, and it topped the digital charts within minutes of its release last week.
