Tourism bosses in South Yorkshire are celebrating after the county achieved record visitor numbers at some of its top attractions over Easter.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster had its busiest April to date after thousands of visitors flocked to see its animals.

Park director Cheryl Williams said: “The visitors and the animals were enjoying the sunshine and warm temperatures and when the weather is good, there is always a happy atmosphere.”

Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Barnsley, also had record visitor numbers, while Wentworth Castle Gardens at Stainforth, near Barnsley, also had a busy Easter, with visitors spending 24 per cent more than last year.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We’re off to a flying start with one of the busiest Easters on record and now another extended Bank Holiday to look forward to.

“We’re inspiring visitors to come to Yorkshire with our award-winning marketing campaign and our TV advert which is now being beamed into homes nationally.

“Once visitors are here, we know our businesses, destinations and attractions are guaranteed to keep them coming back.”

Tourism chiefs are hoping hot weather combined with a triple whammy of Easter, the Royal Wedding and the May Bank Holiday will result in a record-breaking spring season for Yorkshire tourism.
