The recent letter about the building of a motorway service station on what remains of Smithy Woods had all the usual platitudes and even pointed out that this wood was “low grade”. What it failed to point out is the simple fact a low-grade ancient woodland can be improved, it cannot however be recreated.
We have lost so much woodland in the UK that we simply cannot afford to lose more regardless of potential profit.
This venture has to be thrown out, but I doubt that it will and this expected failure to do the right thing will in my opinion show all involved to be complicit in wilful environmental destruction, a crime which should, in any right-minded society, result in jail time for all involved.
Humans are not the be all and end all, we do not occupy this land alone.
