Some of the world's best Pokémon players are competing in day two of a prestigious tournament in Sheffield today.

The first battles in the Pokémon Regional Championships took place at Ponds Forge yesterday, with fierce competition between players from many countries.

Players fought in both the video game and trading card versions of Nintendo's smash hit franchise.

The idea was created in Japan in 1995 and is centred on fictional creatures called Pokémon, which humans, known as Pokémon Trainers, catch and train to battle each other for sport.

The franchise began as video games and now spans trading card games, animated television shows and movies, comic books, and toys.

Pokémon is the second best-selling video game franchise, behind only Nintendo's Mario franchise and one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
