A CAMPAIGN urging locals to be on the look-out for cannabis cultivation has been launched in Derbyshire.
Steve Holme, Derbyshire Police’s expert on drugs, said: “Some people think, ‘It’s only cannabis’ but it’s not to the police.
“It’s a major way of organised crime groups making profit, there’s people trafficking involved, and people use cannabis as a cash generator to then buy cocaine and heroin to sell on the streets. We’ve also known rival gangs stealing plants, houses being broken into in the early hours, and cannabis gardeners being attacked and cannabis stolen.
“All these reasons make it an activity you don’t want in your area.”
Last year 203 cannabis farms and 11,522 plants were found in Derbyshire. So far this year officers have found 34 farms.
