MORE than three tonnes of waste was removed in a community clean up.

Residents dug deep when they got to work in the St Helen’s area of Barnsley.

They cleared footpaths of litter, weeds and grass and tidied up the area.

Councillors, Saint Helen’s Together volunteers, Barnsley Council officers and other community groups helped in the operation.

Problems such as blocked gullies, graffiti, overgrown vegetation and damaged road signs were also passed on to be dealt with.

Further clean ups and environmental improvements will be organised next year.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet member for adults and communities, said: “St Helen’s councillors thank all the volunteers who helped us, especially the 83 year old lady who litter picked her street before coming to meet us.”
