RESIDENTS in Barnsley are being warned to be vigilant after an impostor claiming to be from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau made a series of cold calls offering fake debt help.
A resident in Staincross contacted the bureau in the town, reporting several calls from someone claiming to be a CAB adviser and asking for their bank details.
Pat Heath, chief executive of Barnsley CAB, said: “This is a despicable scam that trades on public trust in our service. No adviser would ever phone or text someone out of the blue to offer debt management services.
“We would urge anyone getting a bogus call like this to end the call as quickly as possible, never give or confirm any personal information, and to report the call immediately.”
n Anyone who receives a suspicious cold call or text should visit www.actionfraud.org.uk/report_fraud or call 0300 123 2040.
