Police have issued a warning after a big rise in handbag thefts from Doncaster pubs and clubs.
During the whole of 2012, 112 handbags were stolen throughout Doncaster, most of which were snatched from revellers who left their property unattended while enjoying nights out.
But so far this year there have been 100 handbag thefts, with a quarter of these taking place in September and October alone.
During the first five days of November, there have been five handbags stolen, three of which were taken overnight on Saturday into Sunday.
Supt Eddie Murphy said today: “We will end up with more handbag thefts this year than last year if this trend continues.
“The issue is, thieves only have to steal one handbag a night. If they get a purse and phone it’s been worth it. A woman’s handbag, when you take the cost of the bag and contents, can easily come to £1,000. If someone has an iPhone or similar you can see that this is not hard to believe.”
