Warning issued over disposal of waste in Rotherham

A man has been ordered to pay over £4,00 in fines and costs over an illegal waste business.

Dan Burkett, aged 55, pleaded guilty at Rotherham Magistrates Court to breaching the Environmental Protection Act after a council enforcement officer spotted a pile of waste on the driveway of a house on Broom Valley Road.

The waste included sofas, mattresses and rubble.

Investigations found that Burkett, of nearby Tooker Road, Broom Valley, was responsible for dumping the waste after operating as a waste disposal business.

He was asked for proof of where waste collected over a two year period had been disposed of but no paperwork was ever provided.

Councillor Kath Sims, Rotherham Council’s Advisory Cabinet Member for Waste, Roads and Enforcement, said: “It might seem very easy to get someone else to take your waste away for a few pounds but the disposal of waste is the personal responsibility of us all. We all have a duty of care to ensure that our waste is disposed of correctly and is not dumped by the roadside.

“Householders can be prosecuted if they allow unlicensed ‘man and a van’ type contractors to take away their rubbish and evidence can be traced back to them.”
