Temperatures were expected to reach 14C today in Sheffield in an unseasonably balmy start to the new year.

Temperatures are expected to reach 14C in Sheffield today as the big freeze thaws at last, in an unseasonably balmy start to the new year.

Forecasters said it would be a mainly dry and breezy New Year’s Day with some rain in the afternoon.

Overnight the minimum temperature is likely to be about 6C.

Meteo Group forecasters said the rest of the week would also be milder than the last few days of freezing temperatures, snow and ice.

Tomorrow, it is forcecast to be bright with temperatures in the daytime of 9C, and overnight of about 3C.

Saturday will be cloudy with spells of rain and highs of about 8C during the day, while it will be 2C overnight

And on Sunday day temperatures are also expected to be around 9C.
