ELECTIONS officers have hailed a ‘very good response’ to a campaign to get people to ensure they are on the voting register.
Barnsley Council said 180,000 people are now on the register, or 93.7 per cent of all the households in the borough.
That means that this year’s register, which was published on December 1, is one of the ‘most accurate ever’.
Officials say many people chose alternative ways to register from traditional form-filling.
They include 5,300 households who registered by text message, 8,600 households who registered by telephone and 8,000 more went online.
Deputy council leader Coun Jim Andrews said: “By using the e-options people have helped us to keep down the costs of compiling this year’s register.”
