VOTE: Which South Yorks chippy is batter than rest?

Vote: Help us find the best chippy in South Yorkshire.

Vote: Help us find the best chippy in South Yorkshire.

THE chips are down – now’s the time to wrap this contest up and vote for the best chippy in South Yorkshire.

You’ve been chipping in for days with your nominations after The Star launched a search to find South Yorkshire’s Best Chippy.

Suggestions have come in for top notch chip shops all around the county – from Barnsley to Balby, Darnall to Doncaster, Manor Top to Mosborough.

And the mouthwatering reasons you gave for choosing your favourites couldn’t be battered.

Early front-runners include Rob’s Fish and Chips in Greenhill, Tony’s in Mosborough, Richmond Fisheries in Richmond, New Cod on the Block at Commonside, Hicks Street Chippy in Shalesmoor, Woodseats Fisheries, Fry Master in Attercliffe, Whitby’s of Catcliffe, and the Castle Chippy in Castle Market.

Nev Furness, aged 72, from Ranmoor Road, said of Hicks Street: “It’s the best fish and chips, and the service is quick.”

Lisa Wright, 48, of Brooklands Crescent, Fulwood, added: “It’s the best around.”

Gilly Carrington, 50, of Greenoak Avenue, Totley Rise, nominated Rob’s.

“Well worth a visit,” she said. “Generous portions, always hot. A taste to die for.”

Maureen Woodcock, 73 of Fulford Place, Darnall, went for Frymaster: “Crispy chips and fish all cooked in beef dripping.”

Ethel Woodley, 71 of College Court, Burngreave, loves Whitby’s. “It’s a long ride on the bus to Catcliffe, but worth it,” she said. “Fish in batter, awesome.”

Kevin Slater, 49, of Delves Road in Hackenthorpe, travels to Mosborough to get his chips from Tony’s. “Best tasting fish and chips in Sheffield,” he reckoned. “Everything is cooked to perfection and it’s always very busy which speaks for itself.”

Laraine Livermore, 58, of Becket Walk, Lowedges, is one of the many fans of Woodseats Fisheries.

She said: “Beautiful white fish, tasty chips. It’s fantastic value and great staff also.”

Annie Coldwell, 91, from Maltravers Crescent, Wybourn, went for the Castle Chippy in Castle Market.

She said: “Good fish and chips and about the cheapest around.”

George Warris, 68, of Auckland Rise, Halfway, agreed: “Chips are brown and tasty. Cod is white and surrounded with tasty batter, not brittle.”

Paul Cross, 49, of Harpenden Drive, Hatfield, went for Rothwells in Doncaster. He said: “It’s a traditional chippy.”

And Anthony Gill, 70, of Rodger Road, Woodhouse, is a fan of the Swallownest Fish Bar.

He says: “The best chips and fish outside Cleethorpes – you should try them.”
