Visitors step back in time at Lodge open day

MARY Queen of Scots may not have enjoyed her stay at Manor Lodge.

But the hundreds of visitors who took a tour of the place had a great time.

Friends of Manor Lodge held a special open day to raise funds for the ancient monument which once held Mary as a prisoner.

Visitors took a look around the refurbished Turret House and new Discovery Centre and enjoyed a guided tour through the ages with a team of re-enactors.

Members of the Sealed Knot Civil War Society did battle in the shadow of the Lodge while the sound of bagpipes filled the air, courtesy of the Sheffield Pipe Band.

There were classic cars, bouncy castles, children's rides and stalls.

Lord Mayor Coun Alan Law unveiled two new additions to the Lodge - a bus called Manor Lodge and full length portrait of Mary herself.

David Templeman, one of 387 members of Friends of Manor Lodge, wore a costume which made him look a lot like a certain Sir Thomas More.

He said: "Sheffield Manor Lodge is unique as it was the pace where Mary was held for 14 years. It wasn't so mush a prison but a place where she was kept in custody in the manner of a Queen.

"She spent a third of her life here and occupied herself with things such as reading, writing and embroidery and she kept lots of dogs too."
